Top 10 Hamster Toys!
Ok, so we've got to admit it, one of the best bits of having a hamster is the toys! So, we have selected our top ten toys that are both safe and fun for your hamsters:
So, other than being irresistibly cute this bridge is actually a health benefit for hamsters. The paints are "pet proof" so your hamster can happily munch on the bridge. The bars over the top arch of the bridge encourage the hamster to climb which enhances their ability to climb more adventurous things. It also doubles up as a tunnel because your hamster can crawl through the middle. This bridge is great value and good quality - what more could you want?
These nibbles (most commonly known as chews) are an example of the wide variety in the market. Dot these brightly coloured chews all around your hamsters cage and they should start to chew on them. This specific packet is excellent value at only £3.99 on Amazon. They are made of wood and have a slightly fruity taste! You may be wondering what the point of chews is, hamsters teeth never stop growing so by gnawing on these chews they will wear them down so they aren't painful. Yet another good factor is they can prevent from bar chewing on wire cages. We definitely recommend purchasing some kind of chew.
Puzzle Playgrounds are one of the best hamster toys around. They basically consist of lots of little plastic pieces that connect together to form a "Puzzle Playground"! They are easiest to buy online as not any pet stores sell them outside of the USA. One of the downsides is that the pieces easily snap when you put the playground together. To prevent this from happening don't press down in the middle of the piece - only on the edges. The playgrounds are great for stimulating and challenging hamsters minds as well as acting as a great hideout. There are so many varieties, they are a bit on the expensive side but they are well worth having!
These balls aren't so much a toy as an essential part of hamster care. They are super cheap on the Pets At Home website at only £5. This specific type of ball comes with a stand, thus allowing your hamster to either run around your house with will, or just stay where they are but be able to run in the ball as If it's a wheel. As it's obviously NOT safe just to let your hamster wonder round your house this provides a safe and fun alternative. However, there is one drawback. Hamster have been known to escape from these balls! As a safety precaution supervision is advised, you can also selotape the doors shut. At such a cheap price you can't afford not to buy one of these!
Yet again, a wheel is a necessity. However, this one is a bit of a luxury - especially id you keep your hamster in your bedroom. Hence the name Silent Spinner, it truly is silent! When buying one online make sure you get the right size for your species of hamster - the one pictured here is specifically for Dwarfs. If you have a Syrian hamster make sure the wheel is at least 8inches wide so it doesn't bend the hamsters back. Another thing to watch out for when buying a wheel is that the surface that the hamster runs on isn't wire or has any wholes in it. If the wheel is wire your hamster is extremely likely to develop a condition called bumble foot. Anyway, back to the silent spinner; as you have probably noticed, it looks really cool as well! It comes in a wide range of colours from purple to turquoise, Unfortunately this luxury comes at a hefty price. The cheapest you can find online is around the £20 region. A Silent Spinner isn't essential, but some kind of wheel is, and make sure it is the correct size and material. If you do buy this wheel, enjoy a quiet night! There are many different types of wheel so it is best to do some research into which one will best suit your hamster.
Who doesn't
love a seesaw? Hamsters love a challenge and will be running up and down a
seesaw just for the thrill of it! If you have two hamsters then this would be
the ideal toy to keep them entertained.
Wooden seesaws are excellent as they double up as a chew at the same time. One thing to be wary off is that they can quite easily fall apart and the little pieces are perfect hamster size. They don't take up to much size so are perfect for those smaller cages!
Hamsters sleep during the day and want a cosy
place to retreat to. Houses, whilst not necessarily being toys, do provide an
extra area in the cage for your hamster to explore. Perhaps try adding a few
houses to your cage to keep your hamster interested. They come in SO many
different colours and shapes - they are also a right bargain at just a few
pounds! The best place to get them is off the internet as they have a larger
range than normal pet stores. Just be careful when ordering your Hidey House as
there are often different sizes for Syrains and Dwarfs. Have fun choosing!
This willow ball has an enchanting tinkling bell inside!
This quirky toy will keep your hamster entertained for hours. They will be
rolling the barrel and curiously trying to inspect the tinkling noise coming
from within! They come in many different materials the one we have as an
example here is made off willow so is perfectly edible and natural. As a safety
precaution, when your hamster chews through to the middle remove the bell as it
could potentially be harmful. Enjoy watching your hamster play!
Plastic (external) tubing: external tubing provides the
opportunity for your hamster to race around the outside of the cage. You could
also join another cage via the external tubing for an extra place your hamster
can explore! (Be aware that interconnecting cages can only be achieved if the
two corresponding cages are of the same make and they have been tested for this
purpose.) One of the best types of tubes to buy are the Habitrail brand. These
tubes are the perfect size for Syrians. You can even purchase special pods to
connect on the tubes so your little critter and have a rest whilst in between
it’s two cages!
The very humble toilet roll cardboard tube! These provide
great entertainment and you can create structures out of them for your hamster
to explore. If you are not very creative then the tube alone will suffice hours
of enjoyment! If your hamster is a chewer then this toy may not be the best
one. Cardboard is hard for hamsters to digest so if they start to chew and then
eat the cardboard then remove the toy immediately. However, if your hamster
just chews the cardboard and then spits it out and doesn’t eat it, you can leave
the toy in. This tube can very quickly turn into a fun DIY project – have fun!
